fanvid

DIY filmmaking workshop and screening led by Alice Quinn Banville and Frank Sweeney

13–15 November 2024

fanvid is a monthly film club based in Dublin for DIY film and experimental moving image. Screening artists film, music videos, phone movies and everything in between, fanvid allows makers and audiences to share work, ideas and get to know each other. It is run by a collective of volunteers and is hosted by Kirkos at Unit 44 in Stoneybatter, Dublin. Over three consecutive days at STARLING, fanvid facilitates a sampling in filmmaking workshop, a how-to on running a DIY film club and a public screening event.

Led by artist and filmmaker Frank Sweeney, the sampling workshop focuses on using found materials to explore montage, contradiction and copying in filmmaking. The outcomes of the workshop are screened on Friday night. No experience is required for the workshop. Ideally participants have access to their own laptop or smartphone, we can arrange the use of equipment for those who don’t have it. Participants are also welcome to drop into STARLING on Thursday evening to continue developing their films and share ideas.

On Friday night curator and producer Alice Quinn Banville hosts a conversation on running a collective DIY film club, followed by a screening of films made by workshop participants. STARLING and fanvid invite submissions of moving image work to be screened alongside workshop outcomes.
